Double Stars

The study of double stars has a long tradition in Belgrade. The observing techniques applied usually have been those belonging to astrometry, that is to measure the separation between two stars. Such stars are referred to as visual binaries (or double stars). However, for a very distant star pair this separation becomes so small that its reliable measuring is either no longer possible, or requires a very large instrument. The application of interferometry can be very useful because then a light source appearing as single can be found as multiple, that is, it is possible to establish its true nature. Here we have an important note – that we can achieve our aims even with instruments of small apertures. Possessing once separation as function of position angle in the tangential plane for different moments of time it is possible to obtain observational bases for the purpose of calculating the true orbit. In Belgrade various methods of calculating true orbits have been applied and extended.
